Toggle1.Make a mood board
If you are starting from scratch, make a mood board. You can do this two ways – either go through magazines and cut out all the things that you like, or that just catch your eye, and put them all on a board and see if a theme emerges. Or if you are someone who actually knows what they want, a mood board is a great way to visually plan out how you are going to bring that to life. You can do this old school with scissors and glue or creating boards on pinterest or saving posts in Insta. However you do it, a mood board is a surprisingly helpful tool. There is a reason why stylists do this right??? (If you’re into Pinterest, check out our inspo boards here; or if you’re an Insta addict like me, we have tons of inspo on our feed here).
2. Add greenery
Plants add colour and freshness to any space and they improve air quality. Try a hanging plant if you don’t have the floor space or a surface to put one on or even do a series of small cacti or shrubs along the windowsill. Our owners, Erin and Leif, are self-confessed plant killers, however have dipped their toes in the plant ownership water, starting with a gorgeous Fiddle Leaf Fig. Eighteen months on, and the fact that it’s still alive is testament to its hardiness and will to live! So don’t be afraid… start with one to build your confidence, and then increase your collection from there. Plants really do help bring life to your space.
3. Mirror, mirror on the wall
Mirrors add so much space to a room and give the illusion of a larger room. They reflect natural light and we think the more natural light, the better.
4. Sometimes the best cocktails, have only two ingredients
What we mean is, less is more. Unless you are going for a deliberately eclectic or elaborate look, you really cannot go wrong with minimalism. We like how fashion stylists approach an outfit, they often take away the last accessory they added. This is a great technique for your home décor. Don’t clutter your spaces, particularly your bedroom which is meant to be a safe-haven. No clutter equals a calm, inviting space.
5. Don’t forget the garnish
Much like a Manhattan needs its cherry, a beautiful bed needs its cushions. This area is a bit of a twist away from step 4, because we are going to tell you that when it comes to cushions… more is more! Cushions create luxury, depth and comfort. They give you the opportunity to bring in a burst of colour and pattern, in a way that is not permanent and can be easily refreshed down the track. Plus they look fabulous! Add a lovely throw and you will think your bedroom came out of a magazine.
6. Quality, quality, quality
We cannot stress this enough. Do your research, pay a little more and pick the right fabric. We did and we chose Velvet and Leather for our product range. You cannot do better. Velvet and Leather offer comfort, style and luxury but also durability. Our end goal is always, timelessness. In style but also in our impact on the planet. Buy right the first time and you only need to buy once. Well, unless you love it so much you want one for every room, then we say GO FOR IT! ?
7. Bedheads are like the dining table, of the bedroom
What we mean is, it’s the focal point of the room, so do not scrimp or be shy here. Go bold and pick something that is really going to tie the room together. Pick something comfortable. You spend ⅓ of your life in bed so everything on and in the bed should be chosen with that in mind. You want to be able to sit up against the bedhead and read a book or have that Mother’s Day breakfast in bed, or, one of our favourite pastimes – a lazy Sunday morning catching up on Netflix! Our bedheads are made with high quality 50mm foam on a 12mm backing board rather than 10mm foam on a 50mm board like most are. Yes we just threw a bunch of numbers at you but what we mean is, we make our bedheads for comfort, not the “illusion of comfort”. Isn’t that what we should all want? Things that make life more comfortable?!
8. Paint, isn’t permanent, but it is pertinent.
Often we only paint once in a decade and we go with something safe because we don’t want to stuff it up. Let me tell you something I realised recently when painting the inside of my house…. If you stuff it up or in two years if you don’t love it, YOU CAN PAINT OVER IT. A fresh lick of paint really freshens up a room, and it feels like a million bucks.
Make sure you keep the tones warm and honestly you really can’t go wrong with white. White is literally a blank canvas so you can add decals, art and pops of colour in your accessories and bedding. If in doubt ask the experts, go to your local paint shop and ask for help, they know their stuff and sometimes if you are like me, staring at a wall of 1000’s of colours, you just want to be told what to do.
9. Sensibly pretty
Make sure you think about being practical in your bedroom as well as beautiful and if something can serve two purposes in one piece of furniture, you are onto a winner. A lovely blanket box at the end of your bed is great for sitting on to put shoes and socks on but also great for storage. A set of drawers at the right height can serve as a dressing table as well. I, myself, have been guilty of spending far too much money on a beautiful chair for the bedroom that was actually not very comfortable. Don’t do that.
Overall, our best advice is, do it your own way and this includes how you do it. If you are ‘get in, get out’ then do it that way. You might just put aside the pennies for a while, think about what you want to do and then do it all in one week/weekend. If you are someone happy to do a bit here and a bit there then do it that way and just purchase or do work when you have the funds and time. Whichever way you do it, make sure you think about what suits you first otherwise it will cause you A LOT of stress one way or another.
Also, do your homework. Research businesses, read reviews, ask for recommendations from friends and if you can, buy local. Aussie businesses need your support!
