How to Pick The Right Bedhead For Your Bedroom
A bedhead is the focal point of your bedroom, and can serve to enhance and anchor your whole room. When selecting a bedhead for your bedroom, you need to consider four key things: Style, Colour, Size and Fabric. Get that mix right, and you’ll end up with the sweetest and strongest foundation for a comfortable, luxurious bedroom.

ToggleAre you buttoned, plain, panelled or studded?
We like to make sure that all our designs are timeless so you aren’t repurchasing new bedheads every trend change. We do four classic looks in our collection.
- Buttoned – Our shallow Buttoned style is great because it is neutral but also makes a real statement. It looks great with almost every trend from minimalist Scandanavian to country chic and even rustic beach house.
- Smooth – If you are someone who prefers your bedhead to be more of a peripheral feature and have your pillows and duvet say everything then a Smooth bedhead might be a better option for you. Smooth is definitely the ‘Little Black Dress’ of the bedhead world. You cannot go wrong.
- Studded – We love Studded bedheads they are luxurious but also a bit edgy, literally. They work well in classic and contemporary bedrooms. The studded border really accentuates colour and makes your bedding pop. If you want a bedhead that works hard for you, this is it.
- Panelled – Our Panelled bedheads offer a lovely ‘softer’ touch to your bedroom if you are wanting something that exudes comfort, luxury and tranquility this is the bedhead of your dreams.

Colour
Where to even begin? We always encourage people to be bold and choose colour if they dare. Often we choose neutral colours with our bigger, more expensive items and then add colour with the smaller and easier to replace items. Lately though, we have seen customers extending their ‘neutrals’ to include moody navy blues, olive greens, warm mustards and blush pinks and they look sensational.
Think about the tone you want to set with your bedroom or if you have already set the tone, what colour will fit best with that tone. Vibrant yellows instantly up your mood and make you want to spring out of bed, dark glues and greens make you feel calm and sleepy. Think about the tone you want to set and pick the colour that matches that.Â
Your bedhead is a large part of the room, so no pressure or anything, but you want to pick a goody that reflects your personality and brings you a little bit of joy every time you enter the room.

Size
Mark out the dimensions of the bedhead on the wall behind your bed with masking tape. This is a great way to make sure that the bedhead is the right size for your bed, the room and the accompanying furniture. Some spaces look absolutely amazing with an oversized bedhead that stretches behind the bedside tables or even scales the entire wall. This bold choice creates a very dramatic sophisticated look and we can custom make a bedhead for your exact dimensions. Just make sure it doesn’t dwarf your room. For most rooms we recommend you make your bedhead width match the size of your bed so it isn’t too big or too small – it’s juuuuuust right.
We also love making bespoke bedheads for smaller spaces like tiny homes or smaller houses, and we’ve even had customers that have tricky powerpoint, niche cutouts or light switches that we needed to work around. This is not a problem – simply send us a sketch of what you need (or a photo of the room is even better!), with dimensions and we can custom make your chosen bedhead style to suit the space.

Fabric
Quality is everything here. Why? Your bank account, your time, the planet and the feel of it. If you pick quality and durable fabrics they will last you longer which means not needing to replace your bedhead for years which saves you time and money in the long run. This also saves the planet, if you make a well-considered purchase now, that costs a little more you also break the cycle of this rapid-consumption. So yay for you!
So which fabrics are the good ones??? Natural fibres are always a winner, but make sure you check into their durability and how easy they are to clean. You may not think your bedhead will get dirty but oils from your skin or even your mother’s day tea that accidentally spilt that one year… will likely leave a mark.
Here at Martini we choose two fabrics, Velvet and Leather. Why? Luxury, durability, ease of cleaning and these two always make a statement. Both are natural fibres and we source them locally to help keep money in our economy.

If you are thinking you’d like to go with a colour, but aren’t quite sure – you can order fabric samples on our website, which will allow you to check the colours next to your bedroom decor and have a feel of the fabric. When it comes to samples, we recommend you pick a few ‘if I was being brave’ colours and ‘sensible colours’ and then maybe a couple in between. Often people are surprised at what they end up choosing.
