Which fabric to choose? Velvet, Linen or Leather?
Life is full of amazing choices – which actually can be a little daunting!
We know you don’t want to stuff up your choice of bedhead, curtains, ottoman or wall panels so here is a little help for you.
We have compared and summarised our three main fabric types available across our website below.

ToggleWhy choose Velvet?
Comfort is key
Is there anything softer than velvet? Not only does velvet feel soft on your skin it also adds a softer, more comfortable vibe to your room.
Luxury
Velvet has this beautiful sheen to it that adds elegance, romance and opulence to any room. Taking it to that next level. It continues to be a massive favourite for soft furnishings.
Highly Durable
Velvet has a very thick weave, which makes it a highly durable material, which yeah you possibly wouldn’t have guessed. It’s great for pet owners as their hair just brushes straight off… and our cat hasn’t tried to scratch or pluck at it once! Hint: There is a reason why we began our range in Velvet, and why to this day it is still our biggest seller.
Loads of options
We have 18 different colours in our standard velvet range, plus thousands more colours and shades and patterns to choose from if you are after something specific. So, if you don’t find what you are after in our 18 colours, simply email us and we can go fabric shopping with/for you! hello@martiniold.impactmarketingservices.com.au
Affordable
This is going to seem weird, given it is what we recommend for a high-end look, but Velvet is super affordable!
A little maintenance goes a long way
Simply add your velvet product to your regular cleaning schedule and it will pay you back in dividends. A gentle vac at regular intervals will stop dust and other bits gathering and not only keep your furniture/cushion looking good but keep those allergies at bay!
Aesthetics
If you prefer bold colours or patterns any fabric is going to give you more options as there is just more range in style, colours, patterns and weaves than in leather.
Life happens
Velvet is not a ‘wipe clean’ surface like say leather, so if you get marks and spills on it you will need to treat them quickly and using the right method (based on the stain and fabric type). Much like your treasured wool coat or favourite little black dress, a little love applied quickly and you’ll be right.
We have plenty of customers who still choose velvet for kiddies rooms, just maybe not for toddlers who like to take textas to the walls and your beautiful new bedhead perhaps?
Why choose Linen?
Breathability is comfort
Linen, like Velvet, is a ‘fabric’ so it is soft to touch and adds a ‘homey’ touch to any room. It will keep you cool in summer and warm in winter. In our opinion it sits nicely between Velvet and Leather in terms of comfort, not quite as ‘melt into me’ as velvet, but more so than leather. But the breathability is off the charts.
Highly Durable
Linen has a tight weave, making it a surprisingly long lasting fabric choice.
Options
We have 14 colourways to choose from in our Linen Range plus loads more if you are after something specific. Simply email us if you are after something custom and we can get started on your journey to better furniture! hello@martiniold.impactmarketingservices.com.au
It draws the eye
Linen is fantastic as a ‘centerpiece’ to any room. They’re perfect for creating a homely space in an eclectic décor scheme, or really any décor scheme!
Anti-microbial
Linen is a natural fabric that has good anti-microbial properties so a good option for a healthy option for your home. Because they naturally offer protection against bacteria, mold, mildew, and other hazardous microbes they are perfect for your home, particularly your bedhead.
Clean it, love it
Much like velvet, linen furnishings need a little love and they will love you back for years to come. A simple regular soft vac and blotting any spills straight away (do not wipe!) and you will be right.
Things to note
Linen is prone to absorbing stains so they can be harder to keep pristine with kiddies around. This does massively depend on where/how you use the linen (ie. a sofa is likely to have kids sitting on it eating spag bol whereas they won’t normally be flinging the spag bol around your bedroom near your bedhead….not normally). If you do choose linen with kiddies, we recommend getting the experts in to stain treat your new purchase. It will be worth it, trust us.
Why choose leather?
Superman of upholstery fabrics
Super strong and durable. It can scratch if you aren’t careful, so doggo nails and scissors are probably a no-no. However normal wear and tear scratches we think add to the allure of leather, particularly if you choose a distressed leather – stunning!
Hypoallergenic
Allergy sufferers, come-one-come-all, leather is for you.
The easiest of cleans
Leather wipes clean, so spills and bits are easily sorted. It also doesn’t absorb smells and collect dust like ‘fabric’ can.
Furniture is an investment
Leather is definitely an investment in terms of the $$ but will typically last longer than a ‘fabric’. Depending of course on the care and maintenance.
Classic is always in style
Whilst the colourways are more limited with leather (we have 15 colours in standard leather and 6 in distressed leather at Martini Furniture) the look never dates. The neutral colour palette of leather makes it easy to combine with other furniture and decor.
They add texture and interest
Mixing leather with other fabrics adds depth and texture to any room. A leather bedhead is a perfect base for building upon with cushions and throws.
